Technical Requirements for Photographs

Digital Photos

Digital photographs are preferred. A digital photo is one taken with a digital camera or a scanned image that is saved electronically. Digital photos can be submitted by email to photos@nwresource.org.

Family Photo Instructions

The site can only display one photo of each family. Attach one digital file to an email message which includes your first and last name, full mailing address and phone number. Photos should be "portrait/vertical" format (height greater than width).

Digital file format should be JPG, TIFF, or bitmap (BMP). See "Scanning Specifications" below for more details.

Mailed photo prints must include the same identifying information as the digital file. Do not write on the photograph itself. We do not return photo prints submitted by mail.

Though family photos are not required, they do help bring a family’s narrative to life. Family photos can only be viewed by registered professionals. They are not available to non-member site visitors or other registered families. AdoptUsKids will not use your photos or personal information for any other purpose without written consent from the family.

Photos are processed and posted within 3 business days of receipt.

Children’s Photo Instructions

For individual photos, name the digital file with the AdoptUsKids case # assigned during registration of the child (for example: "66014256".) Name a sibling group photo with the AdoptUsKids’ sibling case # assigned during registration of the group (for example, "S660139".)

Attach the digital file to an email message which contains the child(ren)'s name and AdoptUsKids Case #, your name, agency’s name, and telephone number, in case there are any problems.

Mailed photo prints must include the same identifying information as the digital file. Do not write on the photograph itself. We do not return photo prints submitted by mail.

Photos should be "portrait/vertical" format (height greater than width). This applies to both individual child and sibling group photos.

Digital file format should be JPG, TIFF, or bitmap (BMP). See "Scanning Specifications" below for more details.

Limit the number of image files attached to each email to a maximum of 5. Digital file sizes can be large and some email systems will reject emails over a certain size.

When mailing photo prints of children, attach a note to the photo with the child's name(s), AdoptUsKids Case # or Sib #, your name, agency’s name, and phone number. Please do not write on the front of the photograph. Please remember to include your name, agency, address and phone number.

Photographs are returned only by request and if you include return address information.

Scanning Specifications

The following applies to scanned photographs and to photographs taken with a digital camera: The resolution of the photographs should be between 150 to 300 dpi, and the image width should be at least 300 pixels. JPG, TIFF, or Bitmap (BMP) file format is required. Please scan photos at 100% of the original photo size. E-mail unedited, un-cropped photographs to photos@nwresource.org. Exception: it is fine to crop white space from around an image. If you find it necessary to resize the photographs, be sure to maintain the height/width ratio (in some software programs this is called "constrain proportions").
