Prijten Family

New York, New York

I am a single father living in New York City. I met my son Devin via the adoptuskids.org website. I went on-line (to adoptuskids.org). In June 2006 his case worker called me saying she was interested in me for Devin and ready to proceed. I met Devin in San Antonio, Texas in August 2006. I went to see him for Thanksgiving and then he came to New York with his case worker for a weekend visit.

The first year was tough; I lost my job, had a cracked disc in my back and suffered nine months of pain and medication. But despite these obstacles, Devin was off all his medication and therapists within six months of placement. His grades improved, he gained sixty pounds in two years, and grew eight inches. His adoption was finalized in December of 2007.

Our lives are great and despite the hectic NYC life, I insist on having a home cooked meal together at home at least four days per week, usually five. This is just for father and son - no TV, friends or girlfriends. It is on these occasions that Devin speaks and talks. This half hour after dinner every night is the most valuable time of the day.

I adopted for many reasons, one being that I was adopted myself. I met my birth parents a few years ago. One day I woke up realizing I had two fathers and two mothers, plus an apartment in New York with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. I could share some of that luxury with the (probably) two million kids and teenagers who have no family. I decided to adopt as a single working father and it was a great experience for both of us.
