Family Stories About Adoption and Foster Care
After becoming inspired to adopt during a church mission trip in Mexico helping children whose parents were in prison, Paige and Travis Dickey of Rincon, Georgia, turned to AdoptUSKids. It was through AdoptUSKids' free photolisting of waiting children that the Dickey's found their 15-year-old daughter Brittany.
For Traci Lucien, 51, of Laurel, Maryland, the bond formed with her daughter before they ever met. Lucien first laid eyes on her daughter, Talynn, 9, through AdoptUSKids’ national photolisting of children in foster care available for adoption. At the time, Talynn was living in a foster home in another state. They talked on the phone, exchanged letters, but Lucien knew she had to meet this child.
Derek and Phyllis Stevens of Harleysville, Penn., founded the parent-support agency Together as Adoptive Parents, Inc. in 1988 after raising four children who were adopted, three of whom had special needs.
When Steven Williams of New York City first set out to adopt, he thought being single and living in a bustling metropolis would pose difficulties. He soon found out he was wrong and is celebrating four years of being a family with his now 14-year-old son Francis.
Ten years ago when Dana and Alan Steele decided to pursue adoption, they never dreamed their family of five would grow to a family of 14. Today with a house full of kids, they couldn’t imagine life any other way.
