Adoption and Foster Care Advocacy

How the Media Can Take Action

Adoption and Foster Care AdvocacyThe cornerstone of our public awareness outreach is a series of new public service announcements geared toward the African American community. These television, radio, and print spots are part of the ongoing, award-winning national adoption recruitment campaign done in partnership between the Children’s Bureau, Ad Council, and AdoptUsKids with the theme, "You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent."

In previous years, this campaign has focused on recruiting families for all children, Latino children, sibling groups, and older children and teens. While these public service announcements still appear in media outlets today, this year’s campaign focuses on the African American community because 31 percent of all children in foster care available for adoption are of African American descent. This is two times the rate of the general African American population for those under the age of 18.

Great strides have been made in recent years to decrease the overrepresentation of African American children in the U.S. available for adoption, but work still needs to be done. Lending your airtime and print space to this important cause will go a long way toward recruiting adoptive families for these children.
