My husband and I began discussing adoption about five years ago, when one of our biological sons was a teenager, and the other was in elementary school. We wanted a daughter, but did not want an infant, and we knew that there were many older children in need of a permanent home.
We did not know about the AdoptUSKids website when we began the licensing process through our state’s Department of Children and Families. After our home study was done, we became frustrated with the lack of information available about waiting children in our state and we then learned about the website. Once we registered, we were able to speak directly with social workers and foster parents and were thrilled to eventually be “matched” with thirteen year old Susan who was in the Kansas foster care system, but placed with a foster family in Missouri. Her social worker clearly liked her very much and was a good advocate for her while being honest about her birth family history and history of prior placements.
After some telephone contact with Susan, we traveled to Missouri to meet her and review her file with her social worker. After the visit, we knew that we wanted to have Susan join our family. She then joined us (with our sons) for a week-long trip to Disney World. The children got along fine, and we continued the process to have her move to our home in New England for a pre-adoptive placement.
It is hard to believe that five years have now passed. Susan is graduating from our local high school with honors and will be attending Penn State’s main campus as a freshman in the fall. We are so lucky and thankful to have found her, and we recommend AdoptUSKids to anyone who mentions they are considering adoption. Thank you!
