The Hicks Family

In the summer of 1992 the local hometown paper published an article from an organization looking to provide respite care for 3 families doing foster care. As I read the article, I thought this was something we could do but I didn’t know what my husband would think about this. I cut the article out and put it on the refrigerator figuring that he would see it and ask what it was. Three weeks went by and he said nothing. I had called the organization and a training class was about to start that we could participate in so I had to approach him with the idea. As we talked about this he agreed that this was something we could do and so I called and registered for the class. We went to the first night of training and on the way home my husband asked if this was something we might want to consider doing full time. I called the next morning and changed the plan over to full time foster care. We finished the classes in December and we were called to take our first placement on New Year’s Eve. We decided I would handle all of the paperwork and outside contacts, and that we would work with the children together. Over the years this has worked well for us. We now have eight daughters and one son. Each of my children has had their ups and downs over their lives. They all have been taught to believe they can overcome anything and be anything that they want to be. Despite their beginnings, they can succeed.
